A beautiful garden at the heart of St Leonards on Sea

Markwick Gardens is a beautiful old Victorian garden originally built to be enjoyed by the residents surrounding it. To enable this to continue a small membership fee is charged and kept low by a team of volunteers who work in the gardens and put on fundraising events throughout the Year.

The Markwick Garden Association is open to all who wish to enjoy access to these marvellous gardens, a green oasis bounded by Markwick Terrace, Dane Road, Brittany Road and Charles Road in St Leonards. It is not necessary to live locally.

Our Objectives

Simply, to return the gardens to their previous Victorian and Edwardian splendour. This calls for continuous maintenance, most of which is achieved by members. More volunteers are always welcome.

Markwick Gardens AGM will be held at 10am on 27th March on Zoom, joining instructions will be sent out in the newsletter.

Dear Markwick members,

I am writing to let you know that unfortunately we will have to postpone our AGM which was due to be held this Saturday, but, in such turbulent and contagious times it is sensible to do so.

Community is vital in times of stress, and now more than ever we need to keep an eye out for our friends and neighbours who may be in isolation at home. On the subject on Covid19, I am sure that everyone of us will be ensuring that we comply with social distancing in the Gardens whilst we continue to get some much needed fresh air and exercise in our beautiful gardens.

Our year in brief – as an association we have had a busy year with many varied events, which although not all have been as well attended as we would have hoped, we did pick up new members and visitors to the Gardens and have ended the year with a healthy bank balance and many happy memories of some superb events.

We are lucky to have incredible support for the Gardens from our committee and many, many other unsung heroes helping out with gardening, photography, advertising, music, cooking, donating prizes, spreading the word, bringing in events and helping us setting up and taking down events, helping to run stalls and of course attending our events and helping to fill our coffers. Quite simply without all this unpaid support, the Gardens would not exist. So, I would like to say a huge, huge thank you to everyone involved for all you do for the Gardens. You are amazing and long may you continue.

Stay safe and look after each other,

Sorrell Marlow-Eastwood

We broke even financially last year and were still able to upgrade paths, which cost nearly £12,000. We were lucky as we received a substantial donation. The income and outgoings for the year were as follows:

Membership: £10,140.50
Donations: £5,071.97
Events: £7,239.30
Miscellaneous: £2,005.00

Maintenance: £12,701.98
Equipment: £2,085.95
Contractors: £5,545.40
Events: £3,147.24
Miscellaneous: £743.69

We had 199 registered members over the course of the year. Looking ahead, the gate code will be changed in April and the new code sent to paid-up members for 2020/21. Please settle your membership fee before then to avoid inconvenience. The fees are:

Family membership: £60
Couple membership: £58
Single membership: £53
Dog registration: £5 per dog

Unfortunately, due to the present situation we cannot guarantee any fundraising events in the Gardens this year. We will attempt to keep you posted.
Please keep well and if anyone needs help during this time, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Wishing you all the very best,
Dulcie Bailey
